Gill Steel, PhD ― Professor

Gill Steel’s research has been mainly on Japan, but she has made forays into comparative work on the UK and on populism. Her current research examines young people’s political engagement in Japan and Britain.

Professor Steel’s forthcoming book is entitled What Women Want. Voting Preferences in Japan, Britain, and the United States (Michigan University Press). Her recent books include Beyond the Gender Gap in Japan (2018), 現代日本社会の権力構造 [Gendai Nihon Shakai no Kenryoku Kozo, Power Structures in Contemporary Japanese Society] (2018), co-edited with Asano Masahiko, Power in Contemporary Japan (2016). She has published articles in various journals and has contributed chapters to a number of edited volumes.

In addition to the Seminars, she teaches courses on Citizen Politics in Japan and Beyond, Politics through Film, Power and Politics in Japan, and Political Behavior.

She has supervised some excellent B.A. theses on a wide range of topics, most recently these include – but are not limited to – Regional Variation in Japanese Print Media Effects over the Kuril Islands Dispute, The Third Wave of Italian Populism and Youth Political Participation, Differentiation and Polarization: An Analysis of Pp and Vox in the November 2019 Spanish General Elections. She also recently co-supervised an M.A. paper on Political Tolerance and Japanese Attitudes towards Non-Japanese Residents.
