Jennifer McGuire, PhD― Associate Professor

Jennifer McGuire was raised on Long Island, New York and obtained a B.A. in Communications from the University of Dayton in the United States. She holds a M.Sc. and DPhil (PhD) in Social Anthropology from the University of Oxford.

She has been living on and off in Japan for over 15 years. Before coming to the ILA, she taught and researched at a number of universities and institutes in Japan. Most recently she held a position in the department of sociology at Doshisha University.

Her research and teaching interests include deaf education, sign language acquisition, deaf studies, and the academic and social inclusion of children/youth with disabilities. Currently, she is working on a project that examines Sign language interpreter training in Japan.
